Laura Willis Dunaway brings years of political fundraising experience to Capitol Strategy Group and to the clients of the firm. Dunaway joined Capitol Strategy Group as a partner in early 2005. She specializes in and manages many of the firm's fundraising, marketing and event planning projects.
2008 election cycle clients include Georgia's 3rd District Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, Major General Rick Goddard's campaign for Georgia's 8th Congressional District, Jim Whitehead's special election effort in Georgia's 10th Congressional District, and the Friends of Fred Thompson presidential campaign's fundraising effort in Georgia. Dunaway also manages the firm's State Senate and State House clients which include among others: Senators Jeff Mullis (Senate Transportation Chairman), Mitch Seabaugh (Senate Majority Whip), Bill Hamrick (Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Chairman), and Representatives Ben Harbin (House Appropriations Chairman), Sharon Cooper (House Health and Human Services Chairman), Wendell Willard (House Judiciary Non Civil Chairman) and Tom Graves.
Dunaway also spearheaded the CSG fundraising team in organizing and executing the Georgia FFA Foundation's First Annual Gala and Auction at the Georgia Aquarium in March of 2008. The Gala was overwhelmingly successful and exceeded the fundraising goal, as well as the expectations of the non-profit organization, such that CSG will be responsible for the Gala again in 2009.
During the 2006 election cycle, Dunaway worked jointly with Capitol Strategy Group partner Diana Kincaid for former Congressman Max Burns' campaign for Georgia's 12th District and former Congressman Mac Collins' campaign for the 8th District of Georgia. Dunaway and Kincaid executed two major events with the campaigns with President George W. Bush and two events with Vice President Dick Cheney. The two congressional races were the top two challenger races in the nation. She and Kincaid also worked with Gary Black in his race for Agriculture Commissioner. During the 2006 election cycle, the firm raised a combined amount of over $10 million dollars for all of the firm's fundraising clients.
During the 2004 election cycle, Dunaway's primary focus was raising funds for Congressman Lynn Westmoreland, ranking number four nationally in fundraising among candidates running in a race for an open seat. During the 2002 election cycle, she was a finance assistant for then-Congressman Saxby Chambliss' historic election to the United States Senate, playing a significant role in raising over $6 million to unseat the incumbent U.S. Senator.
Dunaway began her political fundraising career in 2000 with an internship at a prominent Atlanta political consulting firm. She worked closely with the firm's senior partners to develop the skills necessary to build and maintain a successful fundraising program, working on various campaigns throughout the southeast, including then-Georgia Congressmen Saxby Chambliss and Bob Barr and North Carolina Congressman Robin Hayes.
Dunaway is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a major in Speech Communication. She is a member of the Junior League of Augusta, serves on the board of the Augusta Ballet, and is married to Davis Dunaway.
